The reading passage contends that Brendan and his crew reached North America. Nevertheless, the listening material completely refutes the reading passage and thinks none of the evidences are strong. First, the reading states that the written stories about Brendan’s voyage refers to places like Faroe Islands, Iceland and so on which they visited on the way to North America. In contrast, the listening believes that we can’t be sure the stories refer to the certain islands. For example, some people believe the story book refers to Faroe Island because the sheep were raised there, but sheep were raised in other place too. Another example is about a burning hill mentioned in the book, and many people believe that it refers to Iceland because of volcanoes in Iceland, but it also could be a hill where people set many fires. Second, the reading passage states that researchers constructed a boat curragh, an old Irish boat of the type used by Brendan which demonstrates that in Brendan’s time the boat technology is advanced enough to support Brendan’s journey. However, the speaker in the listening says that the boat is not an exact copy of the actual curragh because the researchers’ ship is much longer, 12 meters long and has more sails. Although this large powerful ship can make a long voyage, it can’t prove that the smaller curragh built in Brendan’s time could do the same. Third, the author, in the reading passage, believes that old markings found at certain locations in North America and the resemblance of those marks to ogham shows that they were made by members of Brendan’s crew. On the contrary, the lecturer in the listening argues that some markings resemble the old Irish alphabet, but many others don’t. Some markings look like pictures or images but real ogham didn’t look like pictures, so the markings may be made by native Americans who did carve pictures into stone.
